Nicole Kidman (Australian Accent) talks about the movie Moulin Rouge, and about the challenge of in a musical.

     When I got the role I just was absolutely floored. I was so excited to get a role where you actually get to have the possibility of doing something so unusual, working with Ewan McGregor, working with Baz, filming in Sydney.

     This extraordinary character, or what he was going to try and achieve with this character. And I just remember going “Oh! This is like such a gift.” And then the reality of playing it set in, ‘cause when we got to Sydney, it was like “Ok! Now we’re just going to do a readthrough.” 

     But, with a readthrough on a musical, you’re not just reading lines, you’ve got to sing and you’ve got to sing unaccompanied and you hope you’re in the right key and it’s very, very confronting and it leaves you feeling very exposed. 

     But that’s what’s brilliant about Baz, is he actually pushes you early on in the piece so that, by the time you start to film, you’re so comfortable with what you’re doing, you’re ready to try anything and do anything. And Ewan and I sat down in sort of the first two days of the initial workshop, which was a two-week workshop in March, and we just looked at each other and we said, “We have got to be willing to make complete and utter fools of ourselves in front of each other, at  any time, and we also have to kind of help each other through this because it’s going to be a long road and he’s going to really push us at times and we’re no good and all of that stuff and let’s really be great mates. 

     And it was like going back to drama school, ‘cause we had singing class, dance class, then we’d have coffee break, and then we’d be off to do improvisational stuff. I mean, and we all lived in this big house, Iona, which is in Darlinghurst in

Sydney. They had all the other actors there. It was drama school!

Dieter: Ich habe ihn nicht.

Jörg: Wo ist er dann? Hast du ihn nicht im Anorak?

Dieter: Moment...nein.

Jörg: Oder hat ihn die Zeitungsfrau?

Dieter: Du hast immer Humor...Halt. Das ist er, im Anorak.

Jörg: Na also!

Dieter: Entschuldige, ich weiβ nicht, was ich habe.

Jörg: Ich auch nicht!

Jörg: Du fährst zu schnell.

Dieter: Wir haben viel Verspätung. Bist du nervös? Du schläfst doch sonst.

Jörg: Sprich nicht so viel. Acht lieber auf die Straβe!

Dieter: Du bist ja blaβ.

Jörg: Wie du fährst!

Dieter: Nein! Auch das noch!

Jörg: Äh...Was ist?

Dieter: Ich weiβ nicht. Ich glaube, der Benzintank ist leer!

Dieter: Heute geht alles schief!

Jörg: Moment. Erst prüfen wir den Benzintank.

Dieter: Da kann ich anhalten.

Jörg: Steck den Schlauch in den Tank.

Dieter: Er ist fast voll.

Jörg: Natürlich! Die Benzinuhr ist ja kaputt. Du bist aber nervös.

Dieter: Ich vergesse alles. Jetzt habe ich wieder Lampenfieber.

Jörg: Gib den Autoschlüssel. Ich fahre lieber.

Jörg: Dieter, woher kommst du? Du bist spät!

Dieter : Entschuldige, Die Zeitungsfrau...

Jörg: Wer?

Dieter: Die Zeitungsfrau...

Jörg: Wie bitte?

Dieter: Schon gut. Wann spielen wir?

Jörg: Jetzt gleich. Wo ist die Gitarre?

Dieter: Die Gitarre!!! Ach! Der Zeitungsstand...

Jörg: Was sagst du? Wo ist die Gitarre? Du bist verrückt!

Jörg: Können wir fahren?

Dieter: Ich glaube ja.

Jörg: Ist alles da? Schau nochmal nach.

Dieter: Alles ok.

Jörg: Auch die Gitarre?

Dieter: Aber ja! Hast du die neuen Kassetten?

Jörg: Ja, sie sind fertig.

Dieter: Wunderbar!

Jörg: Kommst du, Dieter? Steig in den Wagen. Es ist spät.

Dieter Faber: Guten Tag.

Frau Knopp: Guten Tag. Sie wünschen?

Dieter Faber: Die Zeit, bitte.

Frau Knopp: Äh, Sie sind...?

Dieter Faber: Faber, Dieter Faber.

Frau Knopp: Und das ist...äh...?

Dieter Faber: Das ist eine Gitarre.

Frau Knopp: Sie sind also...?

Dieter Faber: Ich bin Dieter Faber.

Frau Knopp: Ist das möglich!

Frau Knopp: Sie heiβen wirklich Dieter Faber?

Dieter Faber: Natürlich.

Frau Knopp: Und Sie kommen aus München?

Dieter Faber: Ja, ich kommen aus München.

Frau Knopp: Ich kenne Sie ja!
Frau Knopp: Sie sind...Sie stehen hier, in dem Magazin...

Dieter Faber: Ja, das bin ich.

Frau Knopp: Sehr erfreut. Ich heiβe Knopp. Mein Name ist Petra Knopp. Ich verkaufe Zeitungen.

Dieter Faber: Ja, ja also, sehr erfreut... Die Zeit bitte.

Dieter Faber: Ja, ich möchte die Zeitung, bitte.

Frau Knopp: Äh, hier, die Zeit. Bitte schön.

Dieter Faber: Danke. Moment mal, ich suche den Geldbeutel... Hier, vier Mark...

Frau Knopp: Ja, danke. Herr Faber...?

Dieter Faber: Wie bitte?

Frau Knopp: Ich möchte bitte ein Autogramm. Für meine Tochter...Sie verstehen?
